It's the second time I read this and my heart shatters. It's not as if someone could have changed Rafael Trujillo's mind and all those lives would then be saved. They're gone and there is no restoring them. The worst possible is to think of how much we can blame a single person for all this hate-- when in fact he had soldiers do the dirty work for him. He did not work alone. Hate did not come from one. It came from many. Aside from that-- the pure ignorance that had to spread through America to be okay and delighted with themselves even as a man who they saw keenly take more than thousands of lives in a number of five days! I understand how immigration can be an issue. But, the issue is not to be so conflicted by a person so insignificant in a way so as to destroy their existence as a whole. I will never understand the neediness to be "the only one." For this, I will never forgive ignorance and those who carry it behind their backs like trophies.

Wow, it's amazing the sheer number of horrors we human beings visit upon each other and then "forget" to tell anyone about! I do believe that anyone who emigrates to another country should learn the language of that country, it certainly doesn't mean they should be expected to give up their own native language or traditions. Immigration has been a tetchy subject since Biblical times and, in my opinion, will continue to be until we find a way to identify ourselves as a species rather than by race/color/creed/nationality, etc.
